The Little Theatre has been bringing live performance to Central Illinois for fifty-one years. It was started by Guy S. Little, Jr., in 1957. He continued hosting performances until 1978. During that time many famous stars came to the little prairie town. They include Mickey Rooney, Leonard Nimoy, Forrest Tucker, John Carradine, Alan Alda, and others. Little Theatre from the Past

In 1981 the community organized to continue the operation of the theatre as a not-for-profit corporation with a board of trustees who represented the Central Illinois region. The Little Theatre On The Square, Inc., purchased the building from Mr. Little. The group renovated the building next door and incorporated it as their ticket and administrative offices.

In 2000 the theatre purchased a dance studio and apartments as a rehearsal building to accommodate the company. The corporation bought a technical production facility in 2001.

Working with the City of Sullivan Civic Center, the theatre group created an education outreach program to promote theatre arts in the Central Illinois Area. They started with jazz, tap, and ballet dancing. In 2001 they added drama classes. They now work with over 275 students in the area. The organization added a touring program called S.T.A.R. in 2004. They perform in area schools and have reached over 26,000 students.

One of the most popular area attractions the Little Theatre on the Square has played to over 600,000 admissions including 130,000 admissions for the young audiences series.
